Known for its cameras and imaging solutions, Canon also provides printing, document and information management solutions for companies. The producer responsibility for batteries and accumulators pertains to Canon as well, as its devices utilise accumulator technology in particular.<\/h3>\n

Nordic Regional Sustainability and Quality Manager P\u00e4ivi Kahelin, how can the producer responsibility for batteries and small accumulators be seen in the everyday operations of your company?<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s not very visible, really. We\u2019ve been a member of Recser from the start, so the producer responsibility has become a part of our everyday activities. We collect information about the amount of batteries and accumulators we import for the producer organisation and report the information conveniently through the same Elker Oy portal as with our electric and electronic devices. In turn, the amount of imported products affects our share of the service package divided among all battery and accumulator producers.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”]

Why do you encourage companies to take care of their producer responsibility?<\/h2>\n

Every company that imports batteries and accumulators is obligated to take care of its producer responsibility based on the Waste Act. The producer responsibility organisation enables companies to collaborate with other producers on these matters. It provides expert help, which makes it easier for companies to understand what they need in order to fulfil their obligations. This is an important part of corporate responsibility with which the company ensures that the products are processed appropriately, efficiently and safely even after their service life has ended. It also guarantees that customers are able to return the products easily to the national recycling system across Finland.<\/p>\n

What kind of environmental matters does your company take into account otherwise?<\/h2>\n

Canon\u2019s activities are guided by the \u201cKyosei\u201d corporate philosophy, which means living and working for the common well-being. Based on the philosophy, environmental matters are also an important part of our operations. Canon is globally certified in accordance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard, and every Canon location in Finland is certified.<\/p>\n

We bear the responsibility for our products throughout their entire life cycle. One example of this is our recycling system that supports a circular economy and through which our customers have been able to recycle their toner cartridges since 1990. At the factory, the reusable parts of the cartridges are cleaned and recovered, after which they are inspected using the same quality criteria as when inspecting new parts. Parts that can\u2019t be reused in the production process are recycled for purposes such as roof tile manufacturing or energy production.<\/p>\n
